Red Monika

This is a study of a character created by one of the most dynamic illustrators in the comic industry today of the last decade, Joe Maduriera.

Red Monika, of Battle Chasers comic fame, is a character that never really got a chance to get off the ground as far as I am concerned. Perhaps I am a little biased by the character’s ample attributes as soooo many of my own characters have similar features. I’m also a sucker for a redhead.

Others may not agree with me, but I bought Battle Chasers because I wanted to catch another glimpse of her latest endeavor or another tidbit into her relationship with Garrison or something greater about her past. Though I thought that the comic was great, the art fantastic, the characters interesting, the anime influence appealing, I bought the book for one thing in mind, buoyant boobs, sassy attitude and the indomitable will that is Red Monika!

Despite her porn star attributes, I found her strength, confidence and sex appeal to be great ingredients for an action character and these are all qualities that I like to utilize in my own character creation and development. The book and the character were all too short lived as Joltin Joe decided to leave his comic roots behind for greater things in California.

I think that California proved to be a success but the thirst of Marvel Comics to sell more comics eventually brought Joe from his California career back into the comics fold. This Drawing was done in honor of his return to comics and was posted on the DW boards for comic fans, Joe fans and Red Monika Fans, to view.

The First drawing met with awes and criticism regarding the overstated abundance of breast tissue. So I gave her a little reduction and posted that as well. Still there were arguments in favor of even more surgery but I stood strong and made that the final redraw.

Later I did a little coloring just for kicks; I never finished the color rendition.

So here’s to hoping that one day Battle Chaser’s is revived and that Joe has the god sense to spin Red off into her own comic.

Let me know what you think
EJ.

Ed,

It's heartening to see that you're working yourself out of your post WreckShop existential funk. Your world did not come to an end after all. The impasse you saw turned out to be a door, and it appears that you've decided to open that door to see what's on the other side.
Keep at it. Imitate, struggle, do whatever you have to to find your own voice, and, above all, respect the characters you create.

I hope you don't mind, but I posted a link to this blog on the Amazons.com forum. If you haven't been to that site, you should check it out - it's full of great artists and writers posting their superhero / muscle artwork and stories. I know people will be thrilled to see new stuff from you!

Man, I'm still getting over this burst of creativity on your blog! It seems the arrival of spring got you out of your apocalyptic funk my friend! I see you're a big fan of Doug Mahnke... have you been following his work on Morrison's Seven Soilders Frankenstien? Phenomenal!

Thanks for the kind words Rob, I’m glad to see that you are heartened. I’m not really sure that I have opened a door to anything, though I have been posting a lot here, none of these drawings are new. The latest drawing was the one featured in the “Down Time” entry. Everything posted this month (May) was done last year and posted on the Digital Webbing Message boards. Those threads have been lost so I thought that I would archive some of the work that I have done here. I hope to get back into it sooner than later. Thanks for the response.

HA! ;p
To each their own I guess.

Mr. Shhh:
No I don’t mind at all, I think that there’s already a link on the site under web logs or artist links. I’ve been there many times and have been a member since it was the She Grew massage board. I think that Lingster has done an incredible job with the site, something fans of the genre really needed.
Thanks

As I mentioned before, I did all of this work last year over a period of 9 months. there is nothing really new here. I missed some issues of Frankenstien, Fell off the comics foa a long time. Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine got me back into the shop the collect that series.
